All natural flea destroyer

I HATE fleas.

Before California, I lived in places where summer was 4 months out of the year. The freeze that ensued for the other 8 months was capable of killing any sort of insect pest that became a bother. But California's round the clock temperate weather makes an ideal breeding ground for those little fuckers. Within my first two months of moving here, fleas replaced mosquitoes as my least favorite insect on the planet.

Enter Talulu. She's a 13 year old cat we adopted on a spur of the moment decision, and it was the best decision we ever made. But you know what fleas love? Cat fur. Once the hot weather hit, they moved into her fur and she's been miserable.

Most flea solutions are costly and deal with a bunch of chemicals that are no way pet friendly, which is why I was happy to hear about Diatomaceous earth.

Diatomaceous earth is a sediment made from diatoms, which are a kind of algae. It's a really fine powder, which you can get for pennies at bulk stores (Sam got us two cups of the stuff for $1!). It works by sapping out the water in the exoskeletons of fleas, killing them by dehydration. If that's too graphic for you, imagine trying to sleep with them crawling all over you.

What we've done is vacuumed, put the earth down, waited 12 hours, and then did the whole thing again. You can even put the earth on pets! We put it on Talulu once a week, any more than that dries your pet's skin out.

So hell yeah, thank you diatomaceous earth!

MAY THE FOURTH BE WITH YOU

Coincidentally, four incredibly awesome things have happened/are happening this week!

FIRST: One of my drawings made it into Friday Magazine!

I did a drawing for the amazingly ecofriendly and talented Kathryn Kellogg of Going Zero Waste, and the french magazine Friday ran an article about her and included my illustration! She's so damn inspiring, you should probably go check out her blog right now.

SECOND: I got interviewed about comics for the Faster Than the World Social Podcast!

Faster than the World Social is a blog/podcast about anything and everything. Ryan, the creative mind behind it all, invited me on for a chat after picking up some of my comics at ECCC. It was insanely fun, and I got to talk how I got started in comics and nerd out for a good half hour. You can check out that interview here (and this goes mostly without saying, but does my voice really sound like that)

THIRD: I'll be at the Escapist drawing stick figures for FREE COMICS DAY!

That's right, from 1:30 to whenever the store ends up closing. So if you ever wondered what you would look like as a stick figure, look no further. The mystery ends on Saturday.

FOURTH (and most exciting): THE CCA MINI COMICS FAIR IS THIS SUNDAY!!

My students are selling their mini comics for the first time, and if you're in the neighborhood I would LOVE for you to stop by and partake in their awesome wares. Seriously, these kids are crazy talented and I'm so proud of what they've done. Also, look at the bitching poster they made!

This week has been pretty great, and I get to spend the WHOLE WEEKEND in a comic book shop. What a great way to end the semester.
